Ancient of Days

Atik Yomin "The Ancient of Days"

Atik Yomin is the internal partzuf of keter, corresponding to the super-conscious power of pleasure in the soul. The term Atik Yomin (in Aramaic) appears explicitly in the Bible, in the book of Daniel, connoting God Almighty in Daniel's vision of the coming of Mashiach.

In general, the keter of a world serves as an intermediate level that connects the previous, higher world to the present, lower world. As every intermediate must in itself possess two levels, one linked to one of the two different and often opposite realities to be connected and the other to the other, so with regard to keter: the partzuf Atik Yomin is linked and considered to be an integral part and extension of the (malchut, the lowest sefirah of the) higher world, whereas Arich Anpin is linked and considered to be an integral part, the actual beginning of the lower world. Thus, Atik Yomin is referred to as "the lower of the higher," while Arich Anpin is referred to as "the higher of the lower."

The term Atik Yomin, "the Ancient of Days," implies absolute transcendence in relation to "the days of the world," the normative consciousness of created reality. The word Atik in addition to "ancient" means "to copy." It is the Divine power "to copy" a higher reality or world onto a lower. Thus, the Atik of a world serves as a totally superconscious DNA-like code to copy higher reality onto lower. In the soul of man, this power inheres in the superconscious pleasure principle of the soul.

Origin

The Covenant that God made with Noah is actually the foundation of universal rights, ethics and spirituality for all mankind. According to the Biblical narrative, in the 33rd century BCE, the Deluge engulfed the land, erasing all life save for Noah, his family, and the creatures aboard the ark. In the aftermath of this cataclysmic event, God established a covenant with Noah and his descendants, which is regarded as the cornerstone of human morality and divine order.

The covenant, as recorded in Genesis 9, emphasizes two central principles: the sanctity of life and the ethical boundaries of sustenance.

  • God admonished Noah and his progeny not to consume "flesh with the life – the blood – in it" (Genesis 9:4), a directive that establishes a sacred distinction between humans and animals, while underscoring the responsibility to treat life with reverence.
  • Furthermore, God declared, "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for in the image of God He made man" (Genesis 9:6). This injunction reflects the divine image imprinted on humanity, making murder not merely a social crime but a desecration of God's creation.

The Talmud (Sanhedrin 56a/b) elaborates on this covenant, tracing its roots to the covenant made with Adam. While Noah received the explicit prohibition against consuming blood, Adam and Eve were entrusted with six fundamental laws, [Noahide_Laws#The_Seven_Laws|derived exegetically from Genesis 2:16]. Together, these seven Noahide Laws form a universal covenant which consist of recognizing One God, reward and punishment and good deeds. It encompassing prohibitions against idolatry, blasphemy, murder, theft, sexual immorality, and the consumption of blood, alongside the establishment of systems of justice to uphold these principles.

Judaism was built on top of this Noahide covenant, and it's only purpose is to act as a beacon to the nations, teaching and preserving the Noahide Covenant. The prophets of Israel envisioned a harmonious world where the nations adhered to these universal precepts, while Israel fulfilled its unique role as a priestly nation, safeguarding and disseminating divine wisdom. In this vision, the Noahide Covenant serves not only as a historical agreement but as an eternal, unifying framework for all humanity, linking diverse peoples to a shared divine purpose.

Origini (it)

Rainbow

Biblical Data

This phenomenon of nature is mentioned but rarely in the Old Testament. The beauty of the rainbow is dwelt upon (Ecclus. [Sirach] xliii. 11 et seq., 1. 7), and the glory surrounding Yhwh is compared to the splendor of the rainbow (Ezek. i. 28; comp. Rev. iv. 3, x. 1). A poetic interpretation, based on ancient mythological ideas, has been given to the rainbow in connection with the story of the Flood. When the waters subsided, G-d placed the rainbow in heaven in token of the covenant He had made with Noah (Gen. ix. 12 et seq.). The rainbow is Yhwh's immense bow of war ("my bow"). This idea may be compared with the conception of the flashes of lightning as Yhwh's arrows (Ps. vii. 13 et seq.; Hab. iii. 11). If Yhwh lays aside His bow and hangs it in the clouds, it is a sign that His anger has subsided; on beholding it men may feel assured that the storm is past and that no flood will come. These mythological conceptions are of course very ancient. They are found in India, where the bow is Indra's weapon, which he lays aside after his battle with the demons. The Arabs also regard the rainbow as K.uzah.'s bow, which he hangs in the clouds when he has finished shooting. The legend of the rainbow is not found in any of the fragments of the Gilgamesh epic.E. G. H. I. Be.

In Rabbinical Literature

The Talmud classes the rainbow with other things created at twilight on the last day of Creation (Pes. 54a), as the Rabbis were disinclined to believe that the laws of nature were changed after Creation. Nah.manides, in his commentary on the Pentateuch, says: "We are forced to accept the view of the Greek scientists that the rainbow is the natural result of the sun's reflection on the clouds." The literal translation of "K.ashti natatti be-'anan" (My bow have I set in the cloud) indicates that the rainbow was already an established institution; but it thereupon assumed a new ro^le as a "token" of G-d's covenant with the earth against the Flood. The token shows that Heaven's wrath ceased, the ends of the bow pointing downward, as the warrior lowers his bow on declaring peace (ib.).

The rainbow is a sign of censure and a reminder that the wickedness of mankind is deserving of punishment. The virtue of the righteous is supposed to protect his generation from evil, and the appearance of the rainbow is a reproach to the community, as it shows that there were none worthy of such protection (Ket. 77b). The rainbow is the revelation of G-d's glory on earth, and to show due respect one must not gaze at the rainbow, just as etiquette forbids one to gaze at a high official (H.ag. 16a). R. Joshua b. Levi thought that on seeing the rainbow one should fall on his face in reverence, as did Ezekiel when he saw "the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud" (Ezek. i. 28). The Rabbis of Palestine, however, censured the custom, as to kneel before the rainbow savors too much of heathenism; but they approved the custom of reciting the benediction, "Praised be He who remembereth the covenant" (Ber. 59a). The full text of this benediction is: "Praised be the Lord our G-d, the King of the Universe, who remembereth the covenant and is faithful in His covenant, and maintaineth His word."
